One of the first staff activities was to be make sure you had bought your Scout moccasin kit from the Trading Post. For $3.50, you got the kit where all you had to do was lace in the top front panel, lace up the back end and then thread the lace through each of the sides to tie in front. Now you had your official staff shoes to wear all summer. Of course, if you wore out the rubber soles so that they came off, you just put them on the inside until you wore through the leather. For those not on the waterfront, their tan line left the tops of their feet white. I can attest to the fact that with all the summer tan, the one area not tanned can lead to a painful sunburn – just very localized. Our Explorer Post took a trip down the White River after summer camp and I experienced that problem first hand – or is that first foot.
